We Played for a Cure in Nicaragua!

In August 2011 the LLV Foundation received an invitation to assemble a women’s softball team and travel to a small fishing village on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua to support a developing women’s softball league.  The softball team in Playa Gigante, Nicaragua was struggling to acquire softball equipment so they could continue to grow.  Our initial invitation was to collect equipment, deliver it to the softball players in Playa Gigante, and play softball with them while we were there.

While the invitation was intriguing, we are a breast cancer foundation, not a sports foundation so we needed to do some homework.  What we learned is, nationwide, breast cancer patients in Nicaragua have a very low survival rate.  We also learned this is largely attributed to a lack of early education, regular screening and individual awareness.

As a small non-profit organization we knew we could not take expensive medical equipment but we could provide much needed education to the people of Playa Gigante.  We pitched the idea and it was enthusiastically received.  So planning began and our journey started taking shape.

The team members for the trip were selected based on their Play for a Cure Oregon participation, sportsmanship and their passion for striking out breast cancer.  Ultimately, 14 players, two LLV Foundation representatives, one doctor and one very brave husband made up our team of 18!

Each individual was responsible for all of their own expenses.  We organized some fundraisers and we were fortunate to have received the support of several groups, businesses and organizations in the community who contributed in a variety of ways to help reduce the cost for the team.

We left  PDX on January 16, 2013 with five large bags full of softball equipment, breast models and teaching materials and tangible enthusiasm!  When we arrived in Gigante on January 17 we were warmly greeted by the community of 400.  About 35-40 women children and dogs were waiting in the church building for us to arrive and teach the Breast Self Exam workshop.  The reception was beyond our expectations.  Our goal was to provide BSE education to individuals who would continue to share it with others.  We saw this happening within hours of arriving in Gigante!

The rest of our time was filled with a softball skills clinic, a trip to the nearest regional clinic, a softball tournament and some beach time!  To say this was a very full and very fast week is an understatement!

Although the primary purpose of our trip was focused on what we were taking to the people of Gigante, we returned from this experience realizing they gave us so much.

Salem, Oregon and Playa Gigante, Nicaragua have become “Softball Sister Cities” and we are all looking forward to a family reunion someday!
